China auto sales growth lags U.S. for first time in 14 years

January 16th, 2012 No comments

China’s auto sales slowed last year, trailing growth in the U.S. for the first time in at least 14 years, after the government ended stimulus measures and as the nation’s economic expansion showed signs of easing.

Total vehicle sales, which include cars, trucks and buses, rose 2.5 percent to 18.5 million, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers today, compared with the 3 percent median estimate of five analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

The country remained the world’s biggest vehicle market for a third straight year, with demand projected to grow about 8 percent this year, the industry group said. Delivery growth slowed from the 32 percent rate in 2010, after China withdrew a two-year package of tax breaks and rebates that helped the country overtake the U.S.

Higher interest rates and restrictions on new vehicles in Beijing also deterred purchases, adding to supply disruptions that sent Honda Motor Co. to its first sales decline in the country.

Pros and Cons of Synchronous Belts

January 14th, 2012 No comments

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, $30 billion annually is spent annually on the electricity powering motor-driven systems. Many of the 40 million electric motors in operation are not running at optimum efficiency. Approximately one-third of the 40 million electric motors in the industrial and commercial sectors use belt drives. If the efficiency of these systems were improved by a mere 5%, the facilities would see tremendous energy savings. Such savings are not out of reach. Synchronous belt drives operate so efficiently that they enable savings across a variety of industrial applications.

There are two types of energy losses in B-belts not inherent in , torque loss and speed loss.  V-belts depend on friction as they are part of a wedging mechanical system and therefore have greater energy loss due to heat generation than a synchronous drive. Another loss comes from the energy required to bend a belt around a sprocket or sheave. The thinner cross section of a synchronous belt requires less energy to bend than the thicker cross section of a V-belt.  Finally, there is a speed loss characteristic of V-belt drives. A positive tooth/groove Synchronous Belt engagement prevents slipping, while V-belt drives, no matter how well maintained, will exhibit some amount of slippage.

Factoring in energy savings, maintenance savings and reduced downtime, payback from converting to synchronous belt drives is typically much less than one year.

There are some special installation requirements for Synchronous Belt drives. Please contact Cii Service to determine if synchronous belts are right for your system.

Toyota unveils next-generation hybrid concept

January 10th, 2012 No comments

Toyota says its NS4 concept, unveiled here this morning, represents a dedicated plug-in hybrid “separate from the Prius family,” but as a mid-sized vehicle, its footprint is basically the same as the existing Prius.

The NS4 features a next-generation hybrid system with smaller and lighter components, and with better fuel economy and greater range in pure-electric mode, Toyota says.

In a statement, the automaker did not say if the NS4 powertrain would maintain the nickel-metal hydride battery pack or evolve to the newer lithium ion pack favored by many automakers in their most recent vehicles.

Tokuo Fukuichi, head of design for Toyota Motor Corp, said Toyota is considering a new platform for the next-generation Prius.

He said the current generation has a relatively high center of gravity. But lowering the engine location and cowl point presents a difficult engineering challenge.

Yoshihiro Sawa, Toyota’s advanced design director, said the Prius’ triangle shape will be maintained with a new vehicle.

He believes current green vehicle designs are “boring and a compromise,” and wants to see Toyota inject emotion into the hybrid vehicle segment with more exciting styling.

Inside, the NS4 will use a multitouch screen that reduces driver distraction.

In addition to telematics functions, the screen will learn driver preferences and habits to anticipate driver responses in specific environments and situations.
